The best time to visit the Eagle’s Nest

The season is the first constraint
The Kehlsteinhaus is not a year-round destination. In 2026 it opens on 8 May and closes on 8 November, and outside that window the Kehlstein road carries no buses, which means there is no access at all. Anyone planning a winter trip to Berchtesgaden should plan around the mountain rather than for it, and build the day around the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre instead.
Within the season, the time of day matters more than the month
Buses run from 08:30 to 16:50 daily between 8 May and 30 September, and from 08:55 to 16:00 between 1 October and 8 November. We would take the earliest departure we could get. Mornings are more often clear, the terrace is quieter, and if the first attempt is fogged in you still have the rest of the day to do something else. A late bus leaves no room to recover.
The autumn end of the season is worth thinking about: shorter operating hours, but thinner crowds and the clear, cold air that gives the 200 km view its best chance. The trade-off is that snow closes the road earlier and more often.
Snow can close the road in any month
The road and the house can close at short notice for snow, and that includes summer. There is no appeal against it: if the buses are not running, nobody goes up. The Berchtesgaden weather and information line is +49 8652 2029, and it is worth a call on the morning if the sky looks unconvincing. This is also the reason we push free cancellation harder here than on an ordinary city tour.
Book a tour with free cancellation and hold a second morning in reserve. On a mountain where the whole product is a view of up to 200 km, a flexible date is worth more than a small saving on the ticket.
What to do when the mountain is closed
- The Documentation Centre at Obersalzberg, at €4.50 per person, is indoors and is the history half of the trip anyway.
- The private Salzburg tour that pairs the Eagle’s Nest with the salt mine has a built-in fallback, because the mine is underground. It is €690 for up to seven people; see private tours.
- If you can only move by a day, check whether your tour allows a date change before you write the morning off. Details of what each tour covers are on the cost page.
For the mechanics of the ascent itself, and what the timetable means for your departure town, see how to get there. Pack for the altitude as well as the season: our notes are on what to wear.
Pick a morning and check availability
Early departures fill first in high summer. The widget below shows live dates for the 4.5-hour Salzburg tour, which includes the bus and the lift.
Frequently asked questions
When does the Eagle’s Nest open in 2026?
The 2026 season runs from 8 May to 8 November. Buses operate 08:30 to 16:50 daily until 30 September, then 08:55 to 16:00 until closing day. Outside the season the road is shut. Plan the journey itself on how to get there.
Is the Eagle’s Nest open in winter?
No. There is no winter access, because the Kehlstein road and its bus service close for the season. A winter trip to the area can still take in the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre, which is indoors.
What is the best month to go?
Any month in the season can be clear or clouded. Summer gives the longest bus hours, autumn gives thinner crowds and often sharper air. We rate a clear morning in either far above the choice of month — the reasoning is on is it worth visiting.
What happens if it snows?
The road and the house can close at short notice, even in summer, and no tour can get you up when the buses stop. Call the Berchtesgaden information line on +49 8652 2029 in the morning, and book something with free cancellation.
