What to wear at the Eagle’s Nest

Layers, and something windproof
Almost all of your hour at the top is spent outside: on the terrace, on the ridge, in the beer garden. A jumper and a wind- and rain-proof outer layer are worth more here than a heavy coat, because you will be warm on the bus and cold the moment you step out at the top. In shoulder season, add a hat and gloves. The mountain closes for snow at short notice in any month of the season, which tells you what the weather can do up there — the dates and the bus timetable are on the best time to visit.
Shoes decide whether you can walk it
The lift is the normal way from the tunnel to the house, but there is a path from the bus platform that takes about 25 minutes on foot. It is a mountain path and it needs proper footwear, so if you want that option, or if the enclosed lift is a problem for you, do not arrive in smooth soles. That choice, and the suitability notes each operator publishes, are covered on the accessibility page.
Sunglasses are not optional on a clear day at 1,834 m, and the view that reaches up to 200 km is easier to enjoy with them.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear to the Eagle’s Nest?
Layers and a windproof jacket. You are at 1,834 m and the terrace and beer garden are open to the weather, so the top is usually colder and windier than the valley. Add a hat and gloves in May or in the autumn end of the season.
Do I need hiking boots?
Not for the lift route, but you do need sturdy shoes if you intend to walk the roughly 25-minute path from the bus platform to the house. Both routes are described on how to get there.
Can it snow in summer?
Yes. The road and the house can close at short notice for snow even in summer, so pack as if the weather can change and keep your date flexible. Our timing advice is on the best time to visit.
